Delhi debacle: Parents kill 21-yr-old DU girl for marrying outside caste

In a bid to hide the gruesome murder, her body was cremated by her parents on Monday morning at their native village in Alwar, Rajasthan. The marriage was against the wishes of the girl’s family as they do not support inter-caste marriages, the husband claimed.

Bhawna Yadav was a Sanskrit (Honours) final year student at Sri Venkateswara College of Delhi University. Her family originally hails from Alwar in Rajasthan. From the past two decades they have been living in Bharat Vihar colony under the Dwarka (N) police station in the south-west district. Her parents have been identified as Jagmohan and Savitri Yadav. Jagmohan deals in real estate. The victim was in a relationship with Abhishek Seth (24), a resident of Uttam Nagar. They had met through a common friend at college.

Bhawna’s parents had planned to get her married with a boy from their community and they were to be engaged on 22 November. Bhawna tried to convince her parents to cancel the engagement as she was in relationship with Abhishek.

They refused the proposal and threatened her of dire consequences. On 12 November, with the approval of Abhishek’s family members, the duo tied the knot at an Arya Samaj Mandir in south-west Delhi. On 13 November, Bhawna’s parents expressed their desire to meet their daughter’s, in-laws. ‘Bhawna’s parents requested that she be sent back home so that they can organise a grand wedding. They said their reputation was at stake and they wanted to convey to the society that it was an arranged marriage,’ a police officer said.

‘Bhawna returned to her home for a grand wedding that her parents promised. After she reached her home, she was beaten up by her parents. Somehow she managed to inform me about the assault. I went to her house and brought her back to my residence in Uttam Nagar,’ Abhishek told this reporter.

The next morning, few relatives of Bhawna including her maternal uncle reached Abhishek’s house and again made a promise of a grand wedding. ‘They again took her back and promised that they will send her back on Sunday after performing a ceremony,’ Abhishek added. However, a few minutes later, Bhawna’s maternal uncle allegedly made a call to Abhishek and threatened to shoot the couple if they did not separate. On the intervening night of Saturday-Sunday, at around 2 am, Bhawna was allegedly strangled to death by her parents at their residence.

Early on Sunday morning, they made a call to their relatives living in Alwar and informed them that Bhawna had been bitten by a snake and for her treatment they would be bringing her by a car. ‘An hour later, they again made a call to their relatives but this time to inform that Bhawna had died on the way and that they should quickly prepare for her cremation,’ the officer added.

On Monday, Abhishek got a call from Bhawna’s cousin, who allegedly supported their marriage, and informed about her murder. Abhishek further informed the police who reached Alwar on the intervening night of Monday-Tuesday and apprehended her parents. The maternal uncle, who is also a partner in the crime, remains absconding.

‘The accused confessed to the crime and were brought to Delhi on Tuesday afternoon. The duo have been slapped with charges of murder and criminal conspiracy,’ police said and added, ‘Raids are also being conducted to nab the maternal uncle of the deceased.’
