Delhi Congress bigwigs face humiliating defeat

Top of the list, was three-time Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit, who lost to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal, in the New Delhi constituency by a huge margin of 25,684 votes. The Congress, which had won 42 seat in 2008, has now tumbled down to 9 seats.
Some of the major Congress bigwigs who lost their seats this election, were Chaudhary Prem Singh, assembly speaker Dr Yoganand Shastri, education minister Prof Kiran Walia, PWD minister Raj Kumar Chauhan and transport minister Ramakant Goswami.
Of the 12 seats reserved for scheduled caste members, usually considered Congress citadels, 11 seats were won by AAP. Congress’ Chaudhary Prem Singh, who held the Ambedkar Nagar constituency since 1956, finished third with 19,753 votes, behind AAP’s Ashok Kumar and BJP’s Khushi Ram Chunnar. AAP candidate Ashok Kumar defeated BJP’s Khushi Ram Chunnar by a margin 11,670 votes.
Delhi chief minister’s blue-eyed boy, PWD minister Raj Kumar Chauhan, lost his seat in Mangolpuri constituency, to AAP candidate Rakhi Birla, who fought elections for the very first time. She defeated Congress leader, Raj Kumar Chauhan, by a margin of 12,595 votes.
Transport minister Ramakant Goswami, who contested from his traditional seat in Rajendra Nagar, also humiliatingly finished third in the race. The BJP candidate RP Singh defeated second placed AAP candidate by 1,796 votes.
Delhi assembly speaker and former minister Dr Yoganand Shastri also faced a heavy defeat and finished third behind the BJP and AAP. Former CM Sahib Singh Verma’s son Parvesh Saheb Singh Verma defeated AAP candidate Navinder Singh Sejwal by 4,564 votes from Mehrauli assembly seat.
Similarly, chief whip and three-time Congress MLA Kanwar Karan Singh, also lost his seat and finished third after getting on 21,494 votes. AAP candidate Akhilesh Pati Tripathi defeated the BJP’s Ashok Goel, by 7,875 votes.
Health and family minister AK Walia too had a similar fate. He lost to Vinod Kumar Binny of AAP from Laxmi Nagar seat by around 8,000 votes, where the BJP finished third. Since 1998, Dr Walia has held a vast array of portfolios in Sheila Dikshit’s cabinet, such as urban development, PWD, Health, Power and Land and Building.
One of the prominent losers in these elections was Kiran Walia, who was the education minister in Dikshit’s cabinet. Walia finished a humiliating third in the Malviya Nagar constituency. The seat was won by Somnath Bharti of AAP with 32,258 votes. Walia could only manage 20,500 votes while Arti Mehra, who finished the runner up, garnered 24,486 votes.
Only two ministers in the recently defeated Congress government, urban development minister Arvinder Singh Lovely and food and civil supplies minister Haroon Yusuf, held onto their seats amid the rout.
