After humiliating defeats in both Delhi Assembly and Lok Sabha polls, the Congress state unit has begun working on a revival strategy. Delhi Congress Chief Arvinder Singh Lovely on Sunday said MPs who could not retain their seats despite being in position of power should accept responsibility for the humiliating defeat in the city and not blame the central leadership.
Delhi Pradesh Congress president and MLA Arvinder Singh Lovely stated that the senior leaders in Delhi were themselves responsible for the party’s defeat in the Lok Sabha polls. He said that the local unit needed much awaited structural changes. People working at the ground level and youngsters will now be given opportunities.
Refuting charges of anti-incumbency factor and lack of strong central leadership, Lovely said, ‘There should be no reason to indulge in blame game and accept the people’s verdict humbly. We should think, analyse and find that reasons as to what went wrong.’ The local unit recently dissolved 14 district and 140 block committees in the city as part of efforts to rebuild the party in the wake of the severe drubbing it suffered in the Lok Sabha polls. The decision was announced after Lovely’s meeting with party president Sonia Gandhi.
In the context of two-term MP Ajay Maken’ defeat, ‘if he cannot manage to win his own seat, then how the high command is responsible,’ he said. Unlike BJP that had made their local party office as headquarters for all candidates the contesting polls, veteran Congress leaders rarely visited the local party office and were separately running the show from their own residences. Observing this Lovely has planned to make the local party office as the focal point of activity for the upcoming assembly election.
