‘Two trucks of relief material, including plastic tents, tarpauline, food grain and medicines have been dispatched to Jammu and Kashmir today (Tuesday),’ said a statement by the Bharatiya Janata Party.
The trucks were flagged off by Delhi BJP president Satish Upadhyay, who took the decision at a meeting on 7 September after the party’s Jammu and Kashmir unit requested them for help.
Flood waters continued to play havoc in Srinagar on Tuesday as authorities scrambled to rescue the marooned and tried to restore the telecom network that has been on the blink for the past three days. Officials estimate that the toll across the state could be around 200, but unconfirmed reports indicate that the number of deaths could be much higher.
Meanwhile, anxious people trying to reach Srinagar to be with their loved ones have been advised against travelling. ‘Jet Airways advised us against travelling to Kashmir. Hundreds of people are stranded at Srinagar airport as a result,’ said PR consultant Sheikh Arfat, whose family is stranded at Gogji Bagh.
