Delhi BJP chief asks councillors, MLAs to give push to ‘build toilet’ programme

A day after prime minister Narendra Modi gave a call to legislators to invest their constituency fund for constructing toilets in schools, Delhi BJP chief Satish Upadhayay has directed councillors and MLAs of his party to adopt a school and slum (JJ cluster) each in their respective areas to construct toilets and install drinking water tanks.

‘We have decided that each councillor and MLA would adopt a government school and a slum to make it model of his constituency. Besides, investing money to construct toilets and reverse osmosis water tanks they would also take care of seven basic amenities such as — better roads, sanitation, health facilities, and proper drainage,’ he added.

However, the seven MPs of the BJP are yet to announce the village they want to adopt to develop as their model villages. Even in Delhi, each MP constituency has some urbanised villages. There are about 80 non-urbanised villages in the city which lack basic urban facilities such as sewage line and water connectivity. They discharge their sewage in nearby water bodies and depend on ground water or water tankers for drinking water supply. Delhi currently has over 690 JJ clusters (slums) which house around six lakh huts and cater to the residential needs of over 30 lakh people of the city. The three municipal corporations have over 1,600 schools and Directorate of Delhi government has 1,100 schools.

BJP has 138 councillors in the three MCDs of the city and 28 MLAs. If the plan is executed properly it can improve public amenities in 166 schools and JJ clusters in Delhi alone.
