Deer deaths remain a mystery as five more reportedly die

What seems worrying is that the real cause of the death has still not been ascertained even though it is felt by the officials that the cause of death is due to rabies. To verify the cause the samples have been sent to Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI).

The continuing trend of deaths can add more pressure on the officials of the National Zoological park who are already facing criticism from the animal activists over animal safety following the 16 deaths.
As per reports in the past three months there have been 46 deaths of deer that have been reported due to various reasons.

Rejecting the claims, however, Riyaz Khan says that most of the deaths being reported are exaggerated claims. Khan, however, acknowledges that there have been deaths caused  due to fights among deer, wound infections and the recent suspected rabies infection.

Khan mentioned that even though there is huge  focus on deaths of the deer there is also a huge production among the deer breeds that go unreported.

Interestingly, most of the deaths that have been reported is of the spotted deer at beat 4 that is close to the beat that houses the Rhinoceros. According to sources, some time back rabies had also affected the Rhinoceros at the zoo.

Facing flak over the safety of animals, the zoo officials have started taking safety measures by introducing vaccination not only for the deer but also for the staff handling them.
