Decks cleared for Barapullah phase 3, work to start in Dec

The go-ahead was given at a meeting attended by senior officials of the Delhi government. Arun Baroka, PWD secretary said the vital corridor will connect East Delhi and Noida to South Delhi, ease traffic on NH-24 and decongest Ring Road on Ashram, South Extension and Bhairon Marg. The ambitious project of Delhi government is expected to cost  Rs 1,260 crore.

The 3.4-kilometre-long corridor will reduce the travel time from Mayur Vihar in East Delhi to AIIMS to 10 minutes. ‘Among the salient features of the extension of Barapullah (Phase III) is the bridge over the Yamuna, which is proposed as an iconic bridge. ‘The proposed extradosed bridge, with a total length of 550 metre, will have only six piers in the river portion with spans as large as 128 metre.  The reduction in the numbers of piers and their foundations in the river will speed up construction and will facilitate development of the river front in the area,’ said a senior Delhi government official.

To provide a signal-free junction with UP Link Road near Mayur Vihar, a flyover parallel to the existing single carriageway flyover will be built along with loops and slip roads from the Barapullah road to Akshardham as well as Noida. Two cloverleaf intersections will also be provided with the new flyover to ensure signal-free entry and exit from Mayur Vihar. State-of-the-art LED streetlights with solar panels on designer poles shall be provided on the structure.

The project will start in December and the work will be commissioned from March, 2015. The project will be completed by December, 2017.

An elevated road from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to Sarai Kale khan over Barapullah drain was constructed by PWD in 2010.  The in-principal approval for extension Barapullah flyover, was given by former government of Sheila Dikshit.
