Decision to raise duty timing for teachers withdrawn

Under fire from the teachers’ community, The Delhi education ministry on Monday withdrew its earlier order that increased the working hours of teachers from 36 hours to 45 hours per week.

The order was withdrawn after a delegation of Government Aides School Teachers Association (GASTA), an association of teachers, met education minister Manish Sisodia on Monday morning demanding the revocation of the of order of the Directorate of Education (DoE) increasing the working hours for teachers schools.

‘We demanded the withdrawal of the notice issued by Directorate of Education (DoE) increasing the working hours of teachers in accordance with the Right to Education Act to 7 hours and 30 minutes daily (The working hours prior to the notification were 6 hours daily),’ said Rajeev Kumar Mittal, general secretary of GASTA.

‘Today (Monday) in the morning, I along with Sanjeev Yadav, GASTA president, met education minister Manish Sisodia and informed him that the order has been issued in a haste and in total disregard of the needs of teachers. It’s quite insensitive to call teachers, especially female teachers at 6.45 am. Many teachers have to travel more than 10 kilometres to reach their schools. How will it be possible to reach in time on public transport,’ Mittal questioned.

According to GASTA, ‘The order was forcing the teachers to stay back nearly for 2 hours extra in the case of schools that run in shifts and nearly one and half hours in case of single shift schools without any prior arrangement of staff rooms, furniture and separate toilets for teaching staff of both the shifts.’
