Death for only rarest of rare rapes, says BJP

Scaling down its stand on capital punishment for all rape accused, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday suggested to the Justice J S Verma committee that death punishment should be given only in rarest of rare cases.
‘A person convicted in a gang rape or a custodial rape or a rape committed after abduction or kidnapping must be punished upto death,’ suggested party president Nitin Gadkari to Justice Verma on behalf of the BJP. The party has further suggested that death penalty could also be given in cases where an attempt on the victim’s life has been made or a disfiguration of victim’s body has been done. ‘Gouging out an eye, severing a limb, cutting an artery which has rendered a victim paralysed are few such examples which should attract death penalty,’ suggested BJP to the committee.
The BJP had earlier taken a much more stringent stand.
