DDU hospital to have special OPD for breast cancer every Wednesday

Sensing the increase in cases of breast cancer, the Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) hospital have decided to set up a dedicated Out Patient Department (OPD) for breast cancer on every Wednesday .

‘Last year we got 50-60 cases of women suffering from breast cancer and most of them were at advanced stage. Over the time, the number of cases have increased and it seems that young women are more prone to breast cancer,’ said Dr Maninder Kaur Chhabra, nodal officer at the hospital.

She further added that lack of awareness about the disease leads to rising cases of breast cancer.

‘The disease can be detected at an early stage. However, it remains undetected, for lack of awareness and ignorance by people,’ said Chhabra.

The hospital also organised cancer screening programme, on the occasion of National Cancer Awareness Day on Friday, in which 464 people were tested for the disease.

‘Around four to five people were suspected for cancer. We screened 100 people in Gynaecology department, 148 people in ENT departments and 216 in surgery department with diagnostic back up from Radiology and Pathology departments,’ Chhabra added.

She further stated that sedentary lifestyle and polluted environment are the main reasons for growing risk of cancer among people.

‘Stress, processed food, bad lifestyle lead to increase in cases of cancer. People should be made aware about it through street plays or health talks. The posters displaying warning signs of breast, oral and genital cancers along with methods for prevention should also be highlighted ,’ the
doctor said.
