DCW to file late night SLP in SC against juvenile’s release

Till the time this report was filed, DCW chief Swati Maliwal had already sought President Pranab Mukherjee and Chief Justice of India T S Thakur’s intervention to stall the release and prepared the petition to be presented to the Supreme Court on Saturday late night.

“DCW filing Special Leave Petition in SC tonight. Will go to Judge’s house, will try get hearing tonight against Nirbhaya convict’s release,” Swati Maliwal, the body’s chief, tweeted.

The convict is scheduled to be released on Sunday.

The development comes on a day the victim’s parents were detained and later released after they held a protest against allowing the juvenile convict to walk free.

The convict, who is now 20-years-old, has been taken to an undisclosed location from a correction
home in North Delhi amid concerns that there was threat to his life.

The parents of the gang-rape victim, along with 40 Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University(JNU) students, were detained by the police after they staged a protest against release of the juvenile convict.

The police action was condemned by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. “I am shocked to learn that Nirbhaya’s parents have been detained. They shud immediately be released. Police action against Nirbhaya’s parents is unacceptable. I have asked Chief Secretary to talk to Police Commissioner and get them released,” Kejriwal tweeted.

“Prime Minister travels the world over, but there is no law for women here. Everyone promises change but nothing has been done,” the victim’s mother said.

The convict was moved out a day after the High Court refused to stay his release. The convict is likely to walk free from the undisclosed location on Sunday, in adherence to the existing legal provision, the sources added.
