Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal staged an event in the Capital on Tuesday and honoured 25 people with the “DCW Achievement Award” on the occasion of International Women’s Day.
The event was attended by many dignitaries including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi and US ambassador to India Richard Verma.
In the awardees’ list, women were shortlisted on the basis of their excellence in life. One of the awardees was Ira Singhal. Singhal, despite being differently-abled, managed to secure the first rank in the UPSC examinations, often touted as the world’s toughest exams, and joined civil services in 2014.
While praising the work of DCW, Maneka Gandhi said: “The DCW’s Neerbhik initiative in which women constables of the Delhi Police visit schools and interact with children and encourage them to report incidences of sexual crimes by putting complaints in a box is praiseworthy.”
During the programme, Swati Maliwal announced that the Commission will soon launch a new programme ‘Acid Watch’ to monitor and prevent instances of acid attacks and sale of acid. “A new programme ‘Acid Watch’ will be initiated by DCW, with budgetary support from the Delhi government. Under the programme, we will monitor incidences of acid attacks and sale of acid and prevent the same as well as recommend solutions to make Delhi acid-attack free,” DCW chief Swati Maliwal said.
