Day One gives students a reason to smile

It is that time of the year again, when anxious students and their parents gather at examination centres across the city for the Central Board of Secondary Education's (CBSE) class X and XII examinations. This year is no different, as on Friday, the first day of the examinations, examinees and their gaurdians reached centres much before the scheduled starting time of 9am. While Friday saw  Class 12 students appear for their English examination, it was time to tap their arts talents for the students of Class X. 'A combined total of 22 lakh students from the two classes, X and XII, have registered for the examaminations this year,' a CBSE official said.

The stress level is yet to build up, though, with both English and Arts, the subjects of the first day's examinations, deemed easy by most students. Khalid Naeem a student of class XII (Science) at Laxman Public school, Hauz Khas, said, 'The school authorities ensured proper seating arrangement and silence in the examination hall which helped me in concentrating on my paper.' Added Manshi Sharma, a Science stream student, of class 12th from Bhai Parmanand Vidhalya Mandir School, 'The paper was easy and I am satisfied with my answers. I hope the other subject papers will be as simple.'Another class XII student, Soam Paal, from the arts stream of R. K Sarvodhya Baal Vidhyalya, said 'The paper was easy and we are hopeful that the next one will be as good. One good thing is that there is a gap between the two papers, so wse will have ample time to prepare for the next one.'

If the class XII students were happy with their first paper, the students of class X weren't complaining either. 'Thankfully the first exam (painting) was easy, so I'm getting more time to prepare for my next paper which is mathematics. It is good to start with an easy subject as it helps to start off on a good note,' said 15-year-old Pragya Vats, a class X student of Sommerville School in east Delhi.

A  CBSE official informed that 1,259,202 students have registered for the class X examination this year, an increase of 6.70 per cent from the last year. In class XII, 12, 942,035 have registered for the examination, an increase of 15.51 per cent over last year. Over 500 examination centres have been set up across the city.

This year, a total of 1,286 disabled students are appearing for the examinations of the two classes.

The examinations for students of class XII will end on April 17, and for Class X on 15 March.
