Day before Sankalp Diwas, 337 VHP acivists detained

As many as 337 Vishwa Hindu activists, including former minister Lallu Singh, were on Thursday detained for trying to participate in the banned ‘Sankalp Sabha’ of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP).

The state government had launched a crackdown on the VHP activists after putting a restriction on the Sankalp Diwas.

UP additional director general of Police RK Vishwakarma in Lucknow on Thursday said that the activists who are trying to participate in the VHP’s Sankalp Diwas have been detained to disallow them to enter Ayodhya.

The maximum detention were made in Mirzapur, where a total of 160 activists were detained, followed by Faizabad 88, Bahraich 7, Sonebhadra 36, Auraiya 3, Sitapur 23, Kanpur dehat 12, Kanpur district 8.

A day before the banned ‘Sankalp Sabha’ of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) at Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh police have detained around 45 VHP activists in the temple city on Thursday.

Faizabad district magistrate Vipin Chandra Dwivedi said officials of all the adjoining districts have been asked to stop entry of the VHP activists in their regions. ‘We have written letter to 31 districts of the state to stop the VHP activists in their areas so that they cannot reach Ayodhya for the Sankalp Sabha to be held at Karsevekpuram tomorrow,’ he said.

Senior superintendent of police KB Singh said here that 88 VHP activists have been arrested or detained so far in the Faizabad district. ‘Some of the activists have been detained in their houses and ashrams with police forces being deputed outside their house so that they can  not come out,’ he said.

While 20 people were detained on Wednesday, 25 more were taken in custody this morning, the SSP said.

However, the VHP has announced to go ahead with the ‘Sankalp’ Sabha and alleged that ban on the programme by the Samajwadi Party government is violation the religious rights of the people. During the Sankalp Sabha, VHP leaders would demand for construction of Ram Temple at Ayodhya at the earliest and would ask the government to go for a Parliament legislation for the temple.

The Akhilesh Yadav government in the state has banned the VHP event apprehending communal flare up like they did during the 84-kosi parikrama on 25 August.

VHP spokesperson Sharad Sharma said here on Thursday that the government is making hue and cry over the function as it was a small function to be held at Karsevekpuram on Friday. ‘We are committed to hold the programme in a peaceful way to demand the early completion of the Ram Temple at Ayodhya,’ he said.

Faizabad police have sealed the borders from today while they are searching for the VHP activists at dharamshalas, hotels, guest houses and ashrams.

Heavy three-tier security arrangements have been made to thwart VHP’s proposed ‘Sankalp Diwas’. Inspector general of police (Law and Order) RK Vishkarma said the authorities will coordinate with Railways.

The IG said special arrangements are being made as the scheduled day of ‘Sankalp Diwas’ on Friday clashes with the auspicious occasion of ‘Sharad Purnima’, when around 50,000 people are expected to take holy dip in Saryu river in Ayodhya, besides immersion of Durga idols from neighbouring Basti district.
Five ASPs, 15 DySPs, 50 inspectors, 70 SIs, 10 lady SIs, 500 constables besides five companies of PAC, one company of RAF, and anti-sabotage teams are being deployed to ensure that ban orders are implemented.
