Day before hearing, Pachauri hospitalised

R K Pachauri, director general of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), has been admitted to a hospital in Delhi, just a day before the High Court was about to hear anticipatory bail plea against the sexual harassment charges slapped against him by a female research associate.

As he is admitted in the hospital, the hearing on Pachauri’s anticipatory bail plea will resume on February 26, a source said. A court on Monday had granted interim protection from arrest to RK Pachauri till February 26 in the case.

The victim in her complaint claimed that Pachauri had sexually harassed her for nearly two years since she joined the organisation in September 2013. She also alleged that Pachauri had engaged in “sexually-laden conversations” with her over email and SMS.

On Tuesday, Pachauri stepped down as head of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and took leave from TERI. Meanwhile, a number of activists on Wednesday demanded his resignation from TERI.

In a letter addressed to the governing council of TERI, social activists including Indira Jaising, Syeda Hameed, Vrinda Grover, Kavita Krishnan, Suneeta Dhar, Pamela Philipose, Kavita Srivastava and Nivedita Menon said the accused should set “an example of exemplary conduct” by immediately resigning from the post. They said despite all the laws that have been put in place, and the efforts made by the country to secure the safety of women following Nirbhaya on December 16, 2012, “women in this country continue to be vulnerable in public places, in their homes and at the workplace”.
