The residents of Daryaganj are forced to face filth day in and day out due to the sheer apathy of the sanitation department.
For instance, stinking toilets welcome you right at the entrance to Daryaganj, at Prakash Chand Jain Marg in front of Gate number 8 of Amedkar Stadium.
‘Despite our repeated demands through associations we are cursed with filth for the last four years,’ said Raj Paul, a resident.
On Monday evening, when Millennimum Post visited, the residents and members of the RWA narrated their plight. The entire municipal waste of the area, which constitute mainly household and hospital waste, is dumped on the roads and left to rot for days before its final disposal.
‘We have complained everywhere to make a new dhalao, garbage collection point, to collect the waste but all the applications and complaints are falling on deaf ears,’ said Ajit Prasad Jain, president of Federation of RWAs in Daryaganj. ‘We have also suggested them places to construct the dhalao but the officers of the sanitation department never took any inititave,’ added Jain. Earlier, the area had a dhalao, which was locked on the order of the court on a public interest litigation filed by a Prem Aggarwal that it was on the land of Archeological Survey of India (ASI). ‘The actual reason for him approaching the court was that the dhalao was in front of his residence,’ added Jain.
The dhalao adjacent to the Shroff Charity Eye Hospital, despite its proximity to schools and hospitals, stinks up the area, as the garbage is let to rot. ‘We cover our noses with handkerchieves every morning and afternoon when we drop our children. We have complained several times to our local councillor but of no avail,’ said Ashok Singh, a resident.
When contacted, local councillor Simi Jain said, ‘I raised the issue in the meeting of Standing Committee on several ocassions. But no proper arrangments have been made so far to construct a proper dhalao and cleaning of toilet and urinal blocks.’
