Daredevilry claims life

They dare so they could be called devils. They flaunt their skills on the bikes, every now and then, and often in the wee hours. In Delhi, they prefer India Gate and Connaught Place to showcase their daredevilry.

But unfortunately, this time round, a biker lost his life and another was critically injured in the process.

A group of 10 bikers came out in the wee hours of Sunday to do stunts on their bikes. But one of the bikes lost control and went skidding down Baba Kharak Singh Marg, killing the driver and critically injuring pillion rider.

'Around 3 am, few bikers were performing stunts in Connaught Place area without their helmets and safety gadgets. The police were informed about this and a team was sent to stop those stunters,' said a police official.

The official added that at 3.20 am, a Pulsar motorcycle was coming at a high speed, carrying the victims, Sunny and Vicky. On seeing the PCR van, the rider got nervous and lost control. The bike skidded for nearly 125 m and hit the PCR van.

Vicky, who was riding, lost his life on the spot. While Sunny was critically injured. Both were taken to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital, where Vicky was declared brought dead and Sunny is under medical supervision. Both of them are students and were not wearing helmets.

He also added that the bikers had taken pains to mask their number plates of their bike by scratching off numbers, so that in case of police intervention, they would not be able to identify them from the number plate.

Recently, on 22 April, a teenager who was performing stunts with his motorcycle at India Gate died as his bike lost control.

Traffic police often initiate drives to keep a check on bikers, who come out in groups and do stunts. But these daredevils still manage to evade the police. According to Dheeraj (name changed), a resident of south Delhi who indulges in bike stunting, 'It makes me feel better about myself. I am fond of motorcycles and what is the use of buying expensive bikes if we don't perform stunts?'

Another biker Anurag (name changed), said, 'The main motive of performing the stunts is to impress girls. With stunts its easy for us to attract girls.'

The bikers even accuse that it is because of the police, who barge in unannounced, that the bikers often lose control.

Satyendra Garg, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), remained unavailable for comments.
