Dana Sangma campaign gathers momentum

Demanding a CBI probe into the dead of a 21-year-old MBA student from Meghalaya, Dana Silva M Sangma, the student community in Delhi said that she didn’t cheat and that Amity University should be punished.

Dana was reportedly found hanging [as per Amity University press release] at her university hostel room on 24 April in Gurgaon after being reportedly humiliated by an invigilator, who accused her of cheating from a mobile at the end term 2nd semester exam of the university.

However, the community is now saying that they have come to know that Dana was made to fill up a form which the Amity University management has projected as confession. But in that Dana had stated, 'I wrote my answers on my own: The answers were not copied from anything. I studied well for this exam.' It shows contradiction in the accusation that Dana was cheating in the examination.

Dana in a written statement after being accused of cheating, stated that she did have her phone on the switched-on mode in her pocket but did not cheat and had prepared well for the exam. The invigilator also gave a written statement saying that her phone was 'found in an ON mode in the pocket'.

Also, the university had hidden her written statement prior to the police persisting in asking for more evidence.

According to the account of a university student who had witnessed the event, the university has already entered her room where she had allegedly hanged herself before the arrival of the police, but the university claims that the room was opened only after the police came. Also, the university argues that they has not judged her or approached her for the incident but according to witnesses, Dana was scolded in the examination hall for 5 minutes and thereafter taken to a separate office room for about 30 minutes. This shows that the university’s account does not correspond to the actual facts.

Police has registered a case under the SC/ST Act against the staff and management of Amity University in connection with the wrongful killing. So far, no arrests have been made.

The community wants her name to be cleared of cheating charges.
