Culture ministers of India and Japan affirm to renew ties

Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Culture and Tourism Shripad Yesso Naik received the Minister for Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan Hakubun Shimomura here today.

During the bilateral discussions the Culture Ministers affirmed to renew Cultural ties between the two countries. The two ministers agreed that friendship between India and Japan has a long history rooted in spiritual affinity and strong cultural and civilizational ties.

The Culture Ministers agreed though India and Japan have a Cultural Agreement signed in 1956, there are no Cultural Exchange Programmes (CEPs) signed between the two countries and there is no mechanism for facilitating or encouraging cultural exchanges. TheCulture Ministers agreed on the need to encourage institutional arrangements such as CEP, for increasing people-to-people contacts in the coming months.

Naik informed Shimomura about the decision of the Indian Government to launch the Festival of India in Japan and requested him for support of the Japanese Government in making this event a success.

The Festival of India to Japan has been scheduled in two phases from October 3-31, 2014 and March-May 2015.
