Following the reports, locals protested against the administration, indulged in stone pelting and vandalism in the area. Police, in order to disperse the mob, used mild force. An FIR was also registered against over 350 people for disrupting communal harmony by erupting violence.
According to the police, the group had information that a truck having over two dozen cattle especially cow would be smuggled to Uttar Pradesh via Delhi. As soon as the information spread, the group alerted locals and a large crowd gathered in Indirapuram area.
At around 11 am, they spotted a truck of the description matching the one they had received information about near a government school. During the haul, it was found that as many as seven animals were dead while others too were in a pathetic condition.
“The crowd signaled the trucker to stop and tried to get hold of those sitting inside. The occupants of the truck, who tried to flee, were caught and thrashed by the crowd,” said a police officer. It was then that the crowd informed the police. But an alleged delay in the police action led to a round of violence.
The officer said the impatient crowd resorted to violence and damaged vehicles on the road and started hurling stones over policemen. A few vehicle, stationed there, were damaged by the mob.
The police had to use mild force to disperse the mob. Later, an appeal for peace was made and the situation was back to normal.
“The truck was impounded by the police while the mob has been booked for rioting and obstructing a public servant from discharging his duty,” said the policeman.
