In rape bid, Man inserts rod into woman’s mouth
4 February: Barely two months after the 16 December brutal gang rape, a 19-year-old woman suffered severe injuries after a drunk cable operator inserted an iron rod into her mouth when she raised her voice to save herself while he tried to rape her in Lajpat Nagar area.
The accused was arrested a day after the incident from Noida and was identified as Anil Kumar (35), an electrician. The victim had to undergo a throat surgery at AIIMS.
CURRENT STATUS: Accused in judicial custody.
Geetika’s mother blames Gopal Kanda, kills self
15 February: Six months after 23-year-old Geetika Sharma ended her life after being allegedly harassed by her former employer and then Haryana minister Gopal Kanda, her 52-year-old mother Anuradha Sharma hanged herself in the same room in which her daughter committed suicide, at their Ashok Vihar house. She left behind a suicide note in which she blamed Kanda and his close aide Aruna Chadha for her daughter’s death which, she said, left her sad and depressed.
CURRENT STATUS: Gopal Goyal Kanda is behind bars in Tihar jail.
Ram Singh commits suicide in jail
10 March: Ram Singh, prime accused in the 16 December, 2012, gang rape of the paramedical student was found hanging in Tihar Jail Number 3 at around 5.45 am. He was found hanging from the iron grill of his cell’s ventilator.
The manner in which the incident unfolded brought forward several conspiracy theories. It was unlikely for the gang-rape accused to succeed in his suicide bid using his clothes and without any intervention. Also there were other inmates present in the cell when he committed suicide.
CURRENT STATUS: Death confirmed to be a case of suicide.
Rs 5 cr killng: Deepak Bharadwaj murdered
26 March: Deepak Bharadwaj (62), Bahujan Samajwadi Party’s richest leader from Delhi, was murdered in a multi-layered conspiracy at his farmhouse in south Delhi’s Rajokri area. The murder took place in a very movie-like manner. Two contract killers along with a driver entered the farmhouse to have a word with Bharadwaj. Finding no one near him, they shot him and fled away.
Fortunately, the entire incident was captured on the CCTV installed at the farmhouse. All the three persons were arrested and the main shooters were identified as Purushottam Rana alias Monu and Sunil Mann alias Sonu.
Bharadwaj’s younger son Nitesh was arrested in connection with the case. Deepak was also a business tycoon and a real estate developer. Nitesh in his confession to the police allegedly said that he planned the murder because he was not happy with his father’s business dealings and paid Rs 5 crore to get Deepak eliminated.
CURRENT STATUS: Nitesh arrested along with his aides. One of the co-conspirators — Mahant Pratimanand is still absconding.
Gudiya gang-raped
22 April: A five-year-old girl was kidnapped and brutally gang-raped by her immediate neighbour and his friend in east Delhi's Gandhi Nagar area. The girl used to stay in the same building where the accused was residing on rent. Allegedly after watching porn on his mobile phone with one of his friends, both working as a labourers, consumed alcohol and planned to rape someone. They came out of their residence and saw the victim playing in the colony. They then lured and kidnapped her.
She was raped several times and assaulted by the duo under the influence of alcohol. Also, the rapists inserted objects such as oil bottles inside her private parts. After committing the crime, the duo had locked the home and escaped. They made her starve for two days at least.
Parents of the girl have registered a missing persons complaint but cops failed to find her. Also, the father of the girl alleged that he was offered a bribe by the cops to ‘cool down’ the matter.
She underwent initial surgeries at Swami Dayanand hospital in east Delhi and later shifted to AIIMS for better treatment. Two days after the incident was reported the two accused were apprehended.
CURRENT STATUS: The two accused are in judicial custody, the victim has been admitted to a public school in Gurgaon.
Metro MMS Scandal
7 July: Objectionable videos of Delhi Metro commuters found their way to the internet. The footage was made with the help of CCTV cameras installed in coaches. The footage included couples caught in intimate positions. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and Central Industrial Security Force started a blame game right after the story was first reported by Millennium Post. So far the culprit behind uploading these videos on internet remain unidentified.
CURRENT STATUS: FIR was lodged against unidentified people in the case; no arrests were made.
Stunt biker gunned down by police
28 July: Stunt biking by around 100 young men led to a tragedy in the heart of Delhi when police opened fire, killing a teenager riding pillion. Inspector Rajneesh Parmar of the Police Control Room fired from his revolver in a bid to puncture a motorcycle’s rear tyre but it instead hit the victim, Karan Pandey, on his back. Another person, who was riding the bike, was injured in the incident.
CURRENT STATUS: Inquiry has been set, reports are awaited.
JNU student slits his friend’s throat
1 August: A Jawaharlal Nehru University student enrolled at the School of Languages attacked his friend Roshni (22) with a cleaver several times and then consumed poison. While the girl survived the attack, Akash (23), who also slit his own throat died in their classroom.
A suicide note was recovered by the police which proved that Akash committed the crime because Roshini did not show interest in him. ‘You started keeping distance from me. You stopped communicating the way you used to do. We used to spend quality time in the library, but now whenever I ask you to join me you always have excuses ready,’ Akash wrote in the letter.
CURRENT STATUS: The accused killed himself. She is studying in
the same college.
NRI student Anmol Sarna murdered
13 September: Anmol Sarna died after attending a drug party organised at his friend’s residence at South Park Apartment in Kalkaji area. Police said the party lasted till midnight after which Sarna was thrashed by the guards — Sunrender Bali and Naresh Mishra — for creating ruckus in the complex. Around 2 am, Sarna was found bleeding in the apartment complex. There were four other friends — Shivang Gambhir, Madhav, Pranil Shah, Rythm Girhotra — apart from Sarna at the party.
During the investigation, it was learnt that all of the friends consumed drugs at Praneel’s apartment after which Anmol started behaving abnormally. According to Praneel’s parents Anmol was completely out of control and had broken the LCD TV at their house.
An eyewitness, however, claimed that Anmol was drugged but fit enough to walk into the police van which was to take him to the hospital. Several theories claimed that he died in the police van.
CURRENT STATUS: Praneel, Rytham, Madhav and Shivank were booked under sections 27 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance Act and under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code. The police charged the complex’s guards with murder. All are out on interim bail now.
DU lab assistant kills herself
2 October: A former Delhi University employee, Pavitra Bhardawaj, set herself afire. She alleged that she was denied justice after she was sexually harassed by the principal of a DU college. She succumbed to 95 per cent burn injuries a few days later in the hospital. She blamed BR Ambedkar college principal GK Arora for taking the extreme step. She also blamed the committee which investigated the matter two years ago and terminated her for framing false allegations.
To add insult to injury, a video of her suicide bid outside the Delhi Secretariat made its way to YouTube and went viral. Meanwhile on the basis of the deceased’s statement, Arora has been booked for abetment to suicide and suspended.
CURRENT STATUS: Committee is inquiring the matter but no arrests have been made in the case.
BSP MP and wife arrested for murdering maid
4 November: BSP MP Dhananjay Singh and his wife Jariti were arrested for torturing their maid Rakhi Bhadra (35) to death and beating the other servants in the house. Rakhi was found dead in the South Avenue residence of Dhananjay.
Another maid, Meena, employed in the house was later found in a miserable condition and admitted to RML Hospital. Her teeth were broken, her right hand was fractured, left hand bore deep injury marks, both her legs showed signs of weakness due to continuous beating. The police said Meena told them that Jagriti often used to cut her hair in a haphazard manner using a razor to prevent her from escaping.
Jagriti’s violent streak was very frequent against the three domestic helps - Rakhi, Meena and Rampal. However, at times, Dhananjay too attacked them after being instigated by his wife, Meena alleged.
CURRENT STATUS: Accused arrested and are in judicial custody.
Father of auto-rickshaw driver burnt by police
10 November: 48-year-old father of two auto-rickshaw drivers was allegedly set on fire by two Delhi police constables in south Delhi’s Neb Sarai area. Satish Sharma was a resident of Tigri Extension in south Delhi. Police officers often used to demand extortion from Satish’s two sons. When the duo failed to pay the money, the younger son was taken hostage by the two constables.
When Satish went to rescue his son a violent argument started between him and the two constables, in a fit of rage the two constables took Satish behind a parked truck and set him afire.
CURRENT STATUS: The constables posted at Neb Sarai police station have been suspended, investigation is on.
