Despite the repeated assurances from the Delhi Police Commissioner to restore confidence of the fairer sex and the residents of north-eastern states living in the city, by providing full proof safety, the crime against women and North-Eastern is rising at alarming rates.
As per the crime graph of the national Capital, women and people from North East states remained soft targets in the city. Besides several brutal rapes, the city also recorded some shocking brutal attacks such as murder of teenage Nido Tania, road-rage incident killing a 29-year-old North-Eastern and the recent Uber cab rape case has shaken the city.
The government repeatedly claims that the people from northeast are safe and are not being specifically targeted in the city, the data related to crime paints a contradictory picture. As many as 925 calls have been received by Delhi police on the helpline number 1093, Special Cell (North-Eastern States) from 1 January to 15 December. According to police, out of 925 received calls, 713 calls made by the North-eastern were crime related.
More than 2,00,000 people from North-Eastern states are living in the national Capital out of which 50% are females, as reported by the North East Support Centre and Helpline (NESCH).
Delhi Police plans to induct 160 youth from the North-Eastern states of the country every year to make it better equipped to deal with crime against people from these states. Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday made an announcement that 10 male and 10 female personnel will be inducted in Delhi Police every year from Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim.
Apart from the rising crime against North-Eastern people in Delhi, as many as five women register cases of rape daily. But BS Bassi, Delhi Police Commissioner chose to look at it differently. According to him women have developed faith in the Delhi Police and are more confident about reporting rapes, than they were two years ago.
To ensure safety of women during dark hours, night patrolling via PCR vans, bikes, pickets have been increased. The staff has been alerted to remain more cautious at night. Concerned officers have been instructed to keep a check on drunken driving. Also, a tab is regularly kept on BPO cabs that must have a male passenger accompanying a female employee.
