GOVT OFFICIAL SHOT AT
A 35-year-old government official was shot at in his house in central Delhi’s Rajender Nagar on Tuesday night, police said on Wednesday.
‘The victim, identified as Sanjay Kumar, statistical assistant in Food corporation of India (FCI), had a verbal argument with his wife’s real estate business partners before the incident took place in Old Rajender Nagar on Tuesday, around 10 pm,’ said a police officer.
According to police, Kumar’s wife Jyoti runs a real estate business with Ajay Sharma, Vipin Sarin and Sunil Chopra in central Delhi. A dispute was going on regarding the same for the last few months. Jyoti had even approached the court and got a plot sealed.
On Tuesday night, Ajay, Vipin and Sunil came to their house and asked Jyoti to withdraw the case from the court. When Kumar intervened into the matter, they plunged into a verbal argument.
Kumar, in the statement to the police, said Ajay pulled out a gun and opened fire at him. The trio then fled from the scene. Later, the victim was taken to a nearby hospital.
Kumar suffered the gun shot injury on his thigh. He is out of danger, said police. ‘We have recorded his statement and verifying the allegations against Ajay,’ said a senior police official.
WOMAN’S LAPTOP SNATCHED, METRO COPS REFUSE TO HELP
Delhi Metro’s claims regarding the safety of women fell flat on their face on Wednesday when an employee of a private firm became a victim of snatchers. In a first-of-its-kind case, a girl was targeted while she was boarding Metro at Noida, Sector-16 station, to reach her office.
The victim, Ritika, a resident of Delhi’s Kalkaji, was going towards her office around 9.30 am. She was carrying a bag containing her purse and a laptop issued from the office.
According to Ritika’s complaint given to the police, she was going to her office located in Connaught place after meeting with a friend in Noida. She entered into Sector-16 Metro station and took the train going towards Dwarka around 9.20 am.
When the train arrived on the platform, she entered but before she could properly get in, a youth aged 24-30 years snatched her bag and fled from the scene. Before Ritika could react, the automatic door of the train had closed and it had started moving. Commuters inside the train advised her to de-board at the next station, Sector-18.
She came back to Sector-16 station, but it was too late. She then approached to the Metro officials and CISF staff deputed at the station. They, however, asked her to approach Delhi’s Barakhamba Metro police staff.
When she contacted Barakhamba Metro police, they refused to lodge her complaint. Adding insult to the injury, they asked her to approach Noida police, as they said the crime was not committed in their jurisdiction. Finally, she approached the Noida police and a case was registered at Sector 20 police station. Metro spokesperson Anuj Dayal said areas in NCR fall outside the jurisdiction of Metro police. ‘We will look into the incident and approach the Noida police to take the matter seriously,’ said Dayal.
ENGINEER PUTS ROOM TO FIRE, JUMPS TO HIS DEATH
A 32-year-old engineer committed suicide by jumping from the sixth floor of his house after putting his room and belonging on fire at Mayur Vihar in east Delhi, police said on Wednesday.
The deceased, identified as Mridul Sahni, a resident of flat number 64 at Asihana Apartment in Mayur Vihar Phase I, died after jumping from his balcony on late Tuesday night. Police said they received a call that there was fire in the house and a man living there jumped from the sixth floor and is lying in a pool of blood.
‘We rushed to the spot and informed the Fire officials. We saw the victim lying in a pool of blood. The fire was immediately doused off,’ said a police officer.
The victim was rushed to Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
During investigation, police found that Sahni was living with his elderly father and was unmarried. He was under depression and was also undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospital for last few years.
The victim was depressed after the death of his mother and elder brother, who was a doctor. His mother died in 2000 and brother a year ago.
Police could not find any suicide note from the spot. He, however, had scribbled a few lines over the walls of his room. ‘But he did not mention the reason behind the extreme step,’ said the officer.
‘The victim, after putting his room on fire, jumped from his balcony and died. He was in depression for quite a few years and was undergoing treatment,’ said Deputy Commissioner of Police (east) Prabhakar.
Investigators examined the site of the incident and found the note scribbled on the wall in blue ink, with a person’s thumb print.
His body has been preserved at a hospital’s mortuary for post-mortem. The police are presently investigating the case and are questioning the family of the deceased.
MAN ROBBED IN VIKASPURI
Four armed persons robbed a travel agency owner in west Delhi’s Vikaspuri on Wednesday morning and fled with a bag containing Rs 24 lakh, police said.
The victim, Ashwani Chopra, 50, was about to leave his house located in block S-3 in Vikaspuri around 9.30 am. He was carrying two bags containing Rs 20 lakh and Rs 4.5 lakh. He was going towards his i10 car, in which his driver Dharmedra was sitting, when he was attacked by four persons, who came in a golden-coloured Assent car.
They stopped Chopra and asked him to hand over the bags. They allegedly opened fire in the air to intimidate him.
They then took away both the bags. The victim later informed the police and a case was registered in Vikaspuri police station. Chopra runs a travel agency in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area.
RACKET BUSTED, DRUGS WORTH RS 10 CRORE SEIZED
Delhi Police on Wednesday claimed to have smashed a drug racket with the arrest of three youths and recovery of 7.5 kg heroin, 5 kg of anxiety relieving drug phenobarbital and 5 litres of an industrial chemical acetic anhydride worth Rs 10 crore.
The arrested have been identified as Ashhab Khan, 30, who is the alleged kingpin, Tauhid Khan, 24 and Mohd Tabrez 34, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Speical Cell) Sanjeev Yadav said. ‘The arrests since 24 July came on an information that drug peddler Tauhid would come to Ghazipur,’ he said.
During interrogation, Tauhid told police that a consignment of heroin was kept at his residence in Ghaziabad.
Police recovered one kg heroin from there. He also told police that Ashhab alias Sabbu Khan was running the racket and on 26 July, the kingpin was arrested from near Jama Masjid. One kg heroin and five litres acetic anhydride were recovered from his residence in Ghaziabad, Yadav said. A raid at his another house yielded three more kilos of heroin and five kg phenobarbital from a secret cavity in a bed. Ashhab also told police that he had supplied heroin to Tabrez, who was also arrested, he said.
‘Khan prepared crude heroin from opium grown in Bareilly. He subsequently brought the crude heroin to Ghaziabad. He has taken three houses on rent for different purposes - in one house he processed the crude heroin to fine quality heroin. He used acetic anhydride for processing crude heroin and then added other narcotic like phenobarbital for increasing the quantity of the fine quality,’ he said.
‘In the second house, he kept fine quality heroin in bulk for safe custody. In the third house, he kept small amount of heroin for retail sale,’ Yadav added.
MAN ARRESTED FOR SMUGGLING SHAHTOOSH SHAWLS
A man was arrested by customs officials from the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport here on Wednesday for allegedly smuggling Shahtoosh and Pashmina shawls worth over Rs 1.5 crore.
The accused, identified as Umar Bashir Dar, was intercepted at the IGI airport on Tuesday and found carrying 32 Shahtoosh shawls and 70 Pashmina shawls, customs official said.
‘The shawls were preliminarily examined by the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau officer who confirmed that these 32 shawls contain Shahtoosh hair fibres,’ a customs official said. The passenger was arrested on Wednesday, the official said, adding, the shawls were seized by the customs officials.
Possession, import or export of Shahtoosh shawls is prohibited under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
The value of these shawls in the international market is about Rs 1.67 crore, he said. The shawls made of ‘Shahtoosh’ is different from other wool in as much as it cannot be harvested, shorn or combed from the animal because it is an under-fleece and the only way to obtain Shahtoosh is to kill and skin the ‘Chiru’ (Tibetan Antelope, scientific name- Pantholops hodgsonil).
Chiru is an endangered species as per the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
Last week, customs officials had seized from a passenger at the IGI airport 2,445 shark teeth, the import of which is also prohibited under the Wildlife Protection Act.
43-YEAR-OLD WOMAN ROBBED AT HER RESIDENCE
Two unidentified robbers barged into a house in Amar Colony early on Tuesday morning and robed a 43-year-old woman, who is an employee at a private company. The robbers tied up her hands and legs before fleeing with the valuables.
The incident occurred when the woman, Kumari Namita, was alone at her residence in Sant Nagar, which is located at East of Kailash in Amar Colony area.
Namita works as a team leader at India Services Private Limited situated in Noida. She said that she reached her rented accommodation from her office at 2.30 am on Tuesday.
Namita mentioned in her complaint that about the same time she stepped out of the apartment to switch on a water motor to fill a tank. At 3.15 am, when she again went out to switch off the motor, two unidentified men barged into her house. They gagged her and tied her hands and legs with a scarf. Then they ransacked the room and asked her for her valuables. She gave them her hand bag that contained her mobile phone, debit cards, credit cards and some cash. They demanded for the cards’ pin numbers. She gave them the pin number of her Citibank card. But the men repeatedly asked her for more. Finally they were convinced that there was nothing else to steal, they left with their third accomplice who was waiting for them outside Namita’s residence.
She managed to set herself free after they were gone and called the police. A case has been registered at Amar Colony police station.
