A 25-year-old youth’s decomposed body was recovered from a drain near the house of former chief minister of Haryana, Omprakash Chautala, on Friday morning.
The victim was identified as Meghru Thakur. The police was informed about 11 am when a passerby noticed the body floating in a drain at Rajendra Prasad Road in Parliament street area.
Thakur, a native of Bihar’s Sitamarhi, was living in the slums of Parliament Street on rent. His body has been sent for post-mortem in Ram Manohar Lohia hospital.
‘During initial investigation, it came to light that he used to drink a lot and might have fallen in the drain after consuming too much liquor,’ said police.
Thakur was employed in NDMC as a carpenter and was reportedly missing since Thursday. An injury was detected on his head, police said.

‘The incident was reported to the police at about 1.55 am on Friday, when the woman called the police control room. The woman was gang-raped by eight men in a car near Jhar Sethi village in Ballabhghar,’ said a senior police official.
As per the complaint lodged by the victim, the police said, ‘She was called by one Inderjeet to sort out the matter with a common female friend. The victim added that, a Santro and a Skoda were following them. ‘Mid way, Inderjeet and his friends started consuming alcohol and gave me a cold drink, after which I became unconscious. I think drugs were added in the soft drink that I consumed,’ said the victim to the police.
The police said that the victim was also gang-raped by the men in the bushes of Jhar Sethi Village after which they dumped her in an isolated corner of the highway. According to the police, after conducting the medical examination, that confirmed rape, an FIR has been lodged against eight men. All the accused are unemployed. The victim is working for the Delhi Jal Board’s call centre in Lajpat Nagar, as a costumer care executive for the last one year. The girl stays in a rented accommodation with her sister and sister-in-law.
‘We have arrested Bharti and have recovered the Nano from his possession. The rear windshield of the car has a Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) sticker and bears a temporary number plate of Haryana. But none of the leader of INLD has contacted the police about the car,’ added the police official.
COURT UPHOLDS TAX EVADER’S JAIL TERM
A Delhi court has upheld a two-year jail term given to a tax evader, saying tax avoidance reduced funds needed for the country’s infrastructure development.
Additional Session Judge S S Rathi made the observation Wednesday while upholding a magistrate court’s order that had awarded rigorous imprisonment of two years and fine of Rs.1 lakh to businessman Harish Chadha, convicted for tax evasion.
‘The case in hand is a glaring example of tax avoidance. Our country is in dire need of funds for sprucing up the infrastructure. One can see rampant tax evasion all around,’ said Rathi.
The judge said hardly five percent of the total population paid taxes. ‘Even those assessed do not come out with true statements of earnings. The world over, tax authorities consider the instance of tax evasion as felony and they are dealt with very sternly,’ said the judge.
The court said the convict tried every trick under their belt to avoid payment of tax dues at the peril of country’s development.
‘They deserve to be dealt with sternly so that right message is sent to violators of tax laws that they should not expect any leniency,’ the court said.
The court was hearing a revision petition filed by Chadha challenging a magistrate court order. The court has held him guilty of evading tax.
‘It is beyond comprehension that a person who had earned Rs.six crore profit in a couple of years does not even have enough money to clear his income tax dues,’ the court said.
