Crime capital: Under central rule, Delhi registers quantum jump in crime cases

When a query was made, cops said Delhi Police is not shying away from registering cases. ‘It is not robberies didn’t happen before, but many cases were not reported due to various reasons. Now, Delhi Police registers every case, no matter how big or small the incident is. This is why the records show such a steep increase,’ said a senior police official. He added the increase in reported robbery cases should be matched with arrests made, which will testify to the efficiency of the Delhi Police.

However, records show that there has been an increase of around 245 percent in the arrests made in cases of robbery, which is not even half of the 618 percent increase in reported robbery cases. Till 31 July 2014, 3,291 cases of robbery were reported as compared to 458 cases for the same period in 2013. In these cases, 2,771 people were arrested this year till 31 July, as compared to 803 arrests till 31 July, 2013.

For snatching cases in Delhi, records reveal there is an increase of more than 266 percent in reported cases till the end of July 2014, as compared to the same period in previous year. However, increase in the rate of arrests made for snatching stands at 61.47 percent, which is not even one-fourth of the 266 percent increase in reported snatching cases.

Molestation cases reported in Delhi show a rather inverse trend. While the number of cases reported have increased by around 11 percent, rate of arrests made has fallen by around 17 percent, show records.

‘CCTV cameras are very helpful in solving theses cases, but unfortunately there are not too many CCTV cameras installed on Delhi streets. At times, CCTV footages are availed from cameras installed on some roadside premises – bungalows or offices,’ said a senior police official. By 2015, Delhi police aims to install ten thousand CCTV cameras in the city, and we have started working on the project,’ said the Delhi Police PRO.

There are more than 800 PCR vans that patrol Delhi round the clock, apart from at least two beat constables from each of the 181 police stations, who are supposed to cover the lanes that fall within their police stations jurisdiction.

One of the biggest robberies this year was that at the Millennium bus depot in Delhi, where a group of unidentified men barged into one of the cash deposit booths, stabbed the DTC official and took away cash and cheques worth more than Rs 7 lakh.
