Crime Branch busts nexus between toll collector and criminals

Delhi Police Crime Branch has busted a nexus between DEP Toll company and the criminals to handle problems created by locals and miscreants of Outer Delhi at toll check points, police said on Monday.

A 29-year-old criminal has been arrested from a five star hotel in Rohini and two illegal double barrel shot guns and two live cartridges were recovered. Krishan Kumar, alias Sunny, was hired by DEP Toll company with a package of Rs 36 lakh per annum for settlement of disputes. According to police, it was learnt that the some criminal gangs are extorting money from the toll companies at various toll plazas by threatening them while the toll companies instead of taking legal action against them were settling and negotiating the amounts by hiring rival criminals.

After getting a tip-off about Sunny, he was arrested and during interrogation he disclosed that when the contract for toll collection was given to DEP company by South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), he started working for DEP. Sunny has hired about 20 persons aged between 20-35 years and pays Rs 10-15 thousand to each of them as salary. Some of them also have licensed weapons. These persons were not on the company’s payroll. However, there is no written contract between the accused and the Toll company.

He wanted to be an actor during his teenage years but in 2006, he was arrested in a criminal case and thereafter, he started illegal business of collecting money at toll plazas along with his associates. In a short span of time, he became a famous ‘Dada’ of the area. Then he entered into a verbal contract by using his muscle power for SMYR Consortium Company to settle the disputes arising at different toll plazas of Outer Delhi with the locals and other criminal gang members.
