Credited with introducing mandolin in Carnatic music, Srinivas passes away

The world of music suffered one such irreparable loss when it lost Mandolin U Srinivas, who died at a hospital in Chennai on Friday morning following a liver failure. Srinivas could be credited with the introduction of the mandolin in Carnatic music.

Born in 1969 in Palakollu, Andhra Pradesh, U Srinivas was initiated into Carnatic music by his father U Satyanarayana. He later became a student of Shri Rudraraju Subbaraju. Srinivas also received training in Western classical music from Shri S Vasu Rao.

He started performing on the concert platform at a very young age, and was acknowledged as a child prodigy in the 1980s. He had performed extensively since those years and was well-established as a professional in the field. The music from his mandolin spread to Other than major festivals in India, he had performed at prestigious music festivals abroad, including the Jazz Fest in West Berlin, the Cervantino Festival in Mexico, the Bach International Festival in the UK, and the Olympic Music Festival in Barcelona in 1992.  

For his outstanding contribution to music, Srinivas had received a number of honours including the title of Sangeetha Choodamani conferred by Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, the Kalaimamani bestowed by the Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Nataka Manram (1991), and the TTK Award of the Music Academy, Madras.

He had received the Padma Shri in 1998. He was an Asthana Vidwan of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham, the Sringeri Sharada Peetham, Shri Raghavendra Swami Mutt of Andhra Pradesh, and received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2009.
