CPWD bribe: CBI recovers Rs 1.27 crore

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday recovered Rs 1.27 crore in the course of searches at several places carried out in Delhi and Gurgaon after the arrest of CPWD superintending engineer in an alleged bribery case.

“These raids were conducted on the basis of interrogation of three accused persons, including the superintending engineer of the CPWD, in a bribery case,” a CBI spokesperson said, adding that some of <g data-gr-id="22">transactions</g> in the case that were made through hawala network have also <g data-gr-id="19">came</g> to light. The accused persons generated cash, which were allegedly used for the purpose of making payments as <g data-gr-id="17">illegal</g> gratification to public servants.

A case was registered under Section 7 and 12 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, on the allegations that the superintending engineer, CPWD, Imphal, was demanding a bribe of Rs 50 lakh from the company for clearing bills, release of mobilisation advance and granting payment for the construction of a multi-purpose building worth around Rs 210 crore at National Information Technology, Imphal. The first installment of Rs 17.5 lakh had earlier been allegedly taken by the said superintending engineer.

Searches were earlier conducted on October 2 at eight places in Delhi, Gurgaon, Ghaziabad, Dehradun, Lucknow, Imphal and Visakhapatnam, which led to the recovery of a large number of incriminating documents. A further sum of Rs 19,23,200 was also recovered from the guesthouse in Gurgaon, where the director (project) was staying.
