According to the police, the victim was killed by his cousin over a long pending family dispute. His cousin’s son and a friend were also involved in the crime, informed police.
On 21 July, a body was found inside a car, with three bullet injuries on the head, near the Ghazipur toll booth. The deceased was later identified as Vinod Pehalwan, (also known as pradhan) who belonged to Ghazipur village.
Soon after news of his death spread, the locals of Ghazipur village staged protest on NH-24, which led to severe traffic situation in the area. Hence, a case under section 302 (murder) of IPC was registered
Ajay Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) said the protests continued even after the case was registered leading to ‘riot’ like situation in the area. Soon, police started investigation and started questioning victim’s relatives.
During the investigation, it emerged that Pehalwan’s cousin, Satbir, his nephew, Nikhil (Satbir’s son), and Nikhil’s friend Parth, were involved in the murder, said Ajay Kumar. Nikhil (22) is a student of law while Parth (23) is an interior decorator by profession.
The trio, during the interrogation revealed that on the evening of 21 July, they intercepted Pehalwan while he was on his way home and opened fire at him.
It was also learnt that Satbir tried to ‘misguide’ police by saying, ‘his cousin was killed on the communal lines’. Further investigations are underway in the case.
