Courts under scanner to try MPs, MLAs after apex court order

The decision taken on Monday stated that trials against legislators should be completed within one year.

In order to expedite proceedings against lawmakers, who continue to enjoy membership of the legislative body, while cases are pending. A bench headed by Justice RM Lodha also said that lower courts will have to give explanation to the Chief Justice of the respective high courts, if the trial is not completed within a year. The apex court said all such proceedings involving lawmakers must be conducted on a day-to-day basis.

Mukhtar Ansari, MLA from Mau constituency, is facing trial in Tis Hazari court for alleged murder of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai in 2005. The trial going on in Rohini court against Gopal Goyal Kanda, a MLA from Sirsa, was for his alleged involvement in the Geetika Sharma suicide case. He recently got bail. Naveen Jindal, a member of parliament from the Kurukshetra, was mentioned in the coal scam FIR filed by CBI.
