On Thursday, a Delhi Court dismissed the anticipatory bail plea of Gopal Kanda, former minister of Haryana and an accused in the suicide case of a 23-year-old former air hostess suicide. The co-accused, Aruna Chadha, has been sent for two-day remand with Delhi police.
P Karunakaran, deputy commissioner of police (north-west) said, ‘Kanda is absconding, and after his anticipatory bail plea wasdismissed, a look-out notice has been issued against him. Our main task is to arrest him, not to make him surrender.’
On Tuesday, Delhi police had summoned Kanda to appear for interrogation in the DCP’s office in north-west district. But he failed to appear. Four police teams then searched for Kanda at various places in Delhi and Gurgaon, including his residence and MDLR office in Gurgaon. Later, police declared him absconding.
Late on Wednesday evening, a plea of anticipatory bail was produced in the Rohini court by Kanda’s lawyer. Additional Sessions Judge Rajnish Bhatnagar dismissed the plea on Thursday, as Kanda failed to appear for questioning before police.
Chadha, on the other hand, has been booked for abetment of suicide and criminal conspiracy and has been sent to two-day remand with Delhi police. In the court session, police said they wanted to interrogate Chadha in front of Kanda. Also, they have collected some evidences that prove that Chadha was involved in the conspiracy.
Names of both Kanda and Chadha were mentioned in the suicide note written by Geetika Sharma, who committed suicide by hanging herself by a ceiling fan on 5 August. When Chadha was produced in the court, she seemed very stressed and depressed.
Meanwhile, according to sources, Gurgaon police believes that if Delhi police had asked them for help, Kanda would not have absconded so easily. ‘After the Geetika’s suicide, we ourselves had increased the security near Kanda’s residence in Civil Lines.
