Couple thrash cop after flouting traffic rules

A 45-year-old traffic cop was thrashed by a couple and three women who  allegedly tore his
uniform after the cop asked the couple, plying on a bike, to stand behind the zebra crossing at the traffic signal in North-west Delhi’s Rani Bagh area.

The incident took place on Tuesday evening when Moolchand was on his duty at a traffic signal in
Madhuban Chowk. After the traffic signal turned red, he asked a couple who was on a bike to take it behind the zebra crossing. According to the traffic cop, it is an offence if you stop your vehicle on the zebra crossing or after it also. The area near the traffic signal is narrow and if someone crosses the zebra line, it leads to traffic jam.

Soon after the cop instructed them, the woman started arguing. In the meantime, he asked the rider to park his bike on the roadside to challan him as he was not wearing a helmet. The woman immediately started thrashing the cop and three other women who came on a scooty also intervened. They were known to the couple and none of them were wearing helmets. All of them started beating up the policeman.

The locals came to the cop’s rescue. Meanwhile, all of them tried to flee the spot but two of them were nabbed and have been identified as Sonam (20) and Bhawna (19). Others are still absconding. After the medical examination of the policeman, all five have been booked under the relevant Sections of the Indian Penal Code at Rani Bagh police station. Further investigation and man-hunt is underway, police said.
