Country’s oldest univ, hospital for ayurveda cuts a sorry face

A lethargic approach of earlier Delhi governments has left India’s oldest hospital ‘Ayurveda and Unani Tibbia College’ in a sorrow state. Lack of adequate staff and much-required infrastructure have been raising threats to its existence.

One can understand the state of this historic medical institution which has been lacking staff members up to 60 per cent from 2001. It is pertinent to mention that the Sheila Dikshit government had deliberately ignored the problems and left this historic institution in a jeopardised condition.

All India Unani Tibbi Congress, General Secretary, Dr Syed Ahmed Khan said that if the position remains same for the next few years a threat to the existence is not far.

Presently, the college is being run by non-teaching staff, who are directors of the college. The post of principal has been vacant for past several years. The Institution Director- cum- Principal Sanjay Gihar said, “There is not a single lecturer, who can fulfill the criteria of professorship. Junior staff cannot be given responsibility of Principal.”
