Council meet adds strength to DU plans for four-year UG programme

Delhi University on Monday looked firm on proceeding with the introduction of the four-year-degree course as its Academic Council (AC) began a marathon meet on the issue. With nearly 112 members present at the historic session of the council, dissent seemed to have been reduced to a minuscule minority as courses after courses were being passed with overwhelming support.

Sources said that as the meeting progressed it became clear that the opposition to the programme was ideology-based as some of the members from Democratic Teachers Front (an affiliate of the CPM) registered dissent during the passage of the syllabus of courses in Zoology and Biochemistry despite having appreciated its content during the deliberations.

Unable to garner support inside the council, Abha Dev Habib, DTF's member in the executive council, claimed outside the meeting hall that the academic body has been reduced to being a rubber stamp. Meanwhile, 37 MPs,  mostly from the Left and allied parties wrote to the Prime Minister on the issue.
