Corpse of newborn infant found in dust bin of private hospital in west Delhi

On Monday a body of a newborn baby girl was discovered in the dustbin of a private hospital in west Delhi. The body of the infant was thrown into the dust bin, thinking it to be an unclaimed corpse. The mother, in a frantic search for her child’s corpse, spotted the body.

Neetu, mother of the deceased infant, at around 1.15 pm delivered the baby on Sunday in a private clinic in Janakpuri. She was healthy with a normal weight but after few hours, doctors noticed some instant swelling over her head. The hospital staff referred her to the nearby Mata Chanan Devi hospital for better treatment. A 5.20 pm, her parents got her admitted at neonatal unit and deposited Rs 31,500 for initial treatment. In the evening doctors informed the parents that their daughter was suffering from breathing problems.

‘In the intervening night of 5 and 6 January, at around 2.15 am, the hospital the parents that their child was dead. They further instructed them to take away the body to their home, in order to perform her last rites. But the shocked family requested hospital authorities to keep the body in the mortuary for the night and promised them that they will claim the body next morning. As per the rules, the parents have deposited Rs 1500 to keep the body in mortuary,’ one of the family members said.  On Monday, at 9 am, when family members reached the hospital and completed all the formalities, the hospital staff failed to handover the body. Receiving this information, family members smelled a rat and they managed to enter the mortuary to look for their child’s body. However, they failed to find her.

Meanwhile, Neetu along with her relatives went to the backside of the building, where hospital authorities used to dump medical waste. She saw a man loading all the waste into a truck and mid-way, she noticed a body of an infant. She immediately raised an alarm and along with the hospital authorities rushed to the spot.  ‘The infant was found behind a yellow color bag in the truck,’ the family member said in a chocked voice. Ranveer Singh, deputy police commissioner (west) said, ‘On the basis of the complaint lodged by the family members we have registered a case against the hospital and booked them under section 297 (Trespassing on burial places or offers any indignity to any human corpse) of IPC at Janakpuri police station.’
