'Corporates not showing interest in building toilets in villages'

The Centre on Thursday said the state governments are free to choose and adopt technologies approved by it to solve the problems of drinking water contamination and construction of cost-effective toilets in rural areas.

Addressing a workshop in the national Capital, Rural Development Minister and Minister of Drinking Eater and Sanitation Birender Singh said that his ministry's Technology Expert Committee had approved over 54 technologies have been so far. 

He urged the states to adopt the technologies on a priority basis as they are affordable, scalable, sustainable and socially acceptable. He added that the newly-built toilets must remain operational and sustainable. The Minister expressed displeasure over the fact that the corporate sector is not coming forward or showing interest in building toilets in rural areas. He also exhorted NGOs to participate in the Clean India Mission and assured them all support. 

MoS for Drinking Water and Sanitation Ram Kripal Yadav said even after 68 years of Independence, over 60 per cent people in the country indulged in open defecation, especially in rural areas. He said women suffer more due to the lack of toilets in rural areas and it is linked with their security. Most incidents of rape occur when women go to relieve themselves to the fields. She said was not a big challenge, but the usage of toilets is certainly a big issue and for this the mindset of people has to be changed.
