Cops try to get Africans, locals together

Delhi Police are putting its best efforts to bridge the gap between African nationals residing in the national Capital and the locals. A special meeting was conducted in the North district on Friday as maximum number of African nationals, mostly students reside in the Maurice Naga area. Moreover, a special WhatsApp group has been created by the police to be in touch with the people of both the communities.

In the meeting between the African nationals and the Resident Welfare Associations, both the parties expressed their issues which were discussed and solutions were pointed out by the senior police officers.

Talking about the one of the key problems faced by the Africans which is language barrier, a Kenyan national John expressed how the attitude of a handful of Indians towards them is. Moreover, at times, policemen attending to their problems don’t understand their language or English and hence are unable to address their issues well.

Meanwhile, applauding the meeting as one of a kind, Ahamefule A Nelson, President of the Nigerian community in Delhi said: “The meeting is first of its kind being organised and would immensely help in addressing concerns raised by African Nationals.”

Talking about the historical significance of African nationals’ stay in India, DCP Madhur Verma said: “It is crucial that efforts must be made from both the sides so that this relationship grows and prosper and smaller hurdles like one in hand is solved with coordinated efforts from both the sides.”
He further said that if any African national is found involved in illegal activities, he must be dealt with in accordance with law.

Assuring that such meetings will strengthen institutional mechanisms, Verma said: “Such meetings would be called regularly so that an institutional mechanism is established to address any grievances of African Nationals.”
