Cops to get efficient for senior officers

In case you are wondering, the adjective ‘inefficient’ exists in Delhi police parlance as well. But the devil, they say, is in the details. Recently, an interesting order was issued by the police headquarters to every police station in the city. The ‘order’ asked the station house officers [SHO] to depute ‘efficient’ duty officers in the police station. But, unfortunately, only when senior officers visit.

The duty officer of a police station is either of a constable or a head constable rank. Visitors to the police station are directed to the duty officer when they want to lodge a complaint. He is also the overall in-charge for maintaining the register of every PCR call made to the police station.

According to the orders, which, apart from duty officer’s posting, also include instructions to keep the mess clean and hygienic and to store the food in hot cases, when the senior officers from districts or police headquarter visit the police station.

As per the guidelines of the union home ministry, senior cops of the district and headquarters should often inspect police stations. The onus is on the district’ senior officials and station house officers if any police station of the national capital was found to be wanting.

‘Since the senior cops have been directed to visit police stations at regular intervals, a special order has been issued by the police headquarters giving us specific instructions,’ said the sources.

For instance, the orders further directed the SHO’s to update entries of the record room and have information on unsolved cases at fingertips. The order also states that duty officer’s room should be kept clean when the officers are visiting. And that the police stations that have close circuit television [CCTV] cameras and computers should ensure that they are in working condition.

‘The orders have been issued shortly after the new police chief took over,’ told the sources.

Paying extra attention to details is, of course, commendable. If only Delhi police didn’t restrict this ‘efficiency’ to senior officers alone!
