Post meeting, a letter was sent to the Police Headquarters about the decision to install 200 CCTV cameras at the dark stretches which have been identified around the North Campus area. To ensure that as many dark stretches are covered, the Station House Officers were categorically assigned to conduct extensive surveys of the dark stretches in the campus area.
“Based on the surveys conducted in their jurisdiction, SHOs of Roop Nagar, Timarpur and Maurice Nagar marked the stretches which were ill-lit and informed about the same in a letter handed over to the senior police officers of the Northern Range” said a senior police officer.
“Although beat patrolling is carried by our force round-the-clock to ensure that the students feel safe. the decision to install 200 CCTV cameras was taken two days ago in a meeting held by senior police officers and the local politicians. These cameras will be installed at crucial points like the University road, Patel Chest, Mall Road and other such places,” said Madhur Verma, DCP (North).
Apart from informing the senior police officers regarding the installation of 200 CCTV cameras, civic agencies such as Public Works Department and Municipal Corporation of Delhi too have been appraised about the non-functional street lights in the areas earmarked in the letter, said the senior police officer.
Padma, a first year student of Miranda House, said: “Although I have been living near my college in Maurice Nagar for the last seven months, I feel that it is really important that the street lights in the area work properly. Moreover, I see policemen every other hour yet I find it is an absolute necessity for the street lights to be functional so that we will safer.”
