Cops nab fugitive after 3-year cat and mouse game

After a chase that lasted a little more than three years, a 31-year-old medical representative was arrested here for the 2011 murder of a 26-year-old married woman, who was his landlady in Delhi, officials said on Sunday.

Ram Kumar, who was arrested late Saturday evening, allegedly had an affair with his landlady, who was already married. When Kumar wanted to wriggle out of the relationship after his marriage was fixed, the woman protested. This led to a heated altercation which resulted in Kumar allegedly killing the landlady.

Kumar is a resident of Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh. He carried a cash reward of Rs 50,000. The incident had taken place on December 8, 2011. The woman had a property in Vijay Vihar which was rented to Kumar while she lived in Rohini Sector 1.

“During the course of investigation, it emerged that the victim reportedly had a close relationship with Ram Kumar. The woman’s dead body was recovered from the Vijay Vihar house of the landlady. After killing her, Ram Kumar went underground,” said Ravindra Yadav, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime). To evade arrest , Kumar had moved to Howrah and Asansol in West Bengal and did petty jobs but later returned to Kanpur, UP and started living there on an assumed identity.

During the initial phase of the police probe, Kumar was the suspect in the murder. Police had formed many teams to trace him and raids were conducted at many places, including his native place in Uttar Pradesh.  But he managed to give cops the slip for more than three years, Yadav said. On Saturday, police got a tip- off that Ram Kumar would come to Pushp Vihar area to meet his friend following which a trap was laid and he was nabbed.

On interrogation, Kumar has confessed that he had committed the murder, police said. Kumar has done graduation in B.Sc. (Biology) and had come to Delhi in 2007 to earn his livelihood. He worked as a medical representative in a reputed pharma company. In the meantime, he came in contact with the victim who was an employee at a clinic in Sector 3, Rohini, Delhi. Love blossomed between the duo, but after some time, he allegedly started ignoring her as his marriage was fixed with someone else. The woman was allegedly not happy with this as she intended to settle down with him. This became a cause of friction and led to frequent fights, said Ravindra Yadav.
