Cops looking for Asaram Bapu’s son in Delhi

The search for Narayan Sai, son of spiritual guru Asaram Bapu who has been arrested on charges of sexual assault, continued at locations in south and west Delhi, police said on Wednesday.

The Gujarat and Delhi police combined their forces in searching Najafgarh in south and Rohini in west Delhi on Tuesday night for Narayan Sai, who has been on the run since a complaint of rape was filed against him in Surat, Gujarat, 6 October.

The complaint was filed by a 30-year-old woman, who alleged that Narayan Sai raped her from 2001 to 2005.

‘There are a few more suspected places on the radar where we would search for Narayan Sai,’ said a senior Gujarat Police officer.

Two sisters, who lived in Surat, have filed rape complaints against Asaram Bapu and Narayan Sai at different police stations in Gujarat. They alleged they were raped by the duo during their stay in the ashram in mid-2000s.

The younger of the two sisters had filed a complaint against Sai, accusing him of repeated sexual assault between 2002 and 2005 when she was living in their Surat ashram.

Narayan Sai had filed for anticipatory bail in a court in Surat. The hearing on which was adjourned on Tuesday after the prosecution sought time to file a detailed reply on it.  Sai and his father had also filed petitions in Gujarat high court seeking quashing of the complaints lodged against them on the grounds of delay in the filing of the complaints and the frivolous grounds on which they were lodged.

The elder of the two sisters, in her complaint, had accused Asaram of repeated sexual assault between 1997 and 2006 during the time she had been living in his ashram on the outskirts of Ahmedabad city.

Asaram, 72, was brought to Ahmedabad on Monday evening on a transit remand from a court in Jodhpur, where he was lodged in a jail since August in another sexual assault case.

A magisterial court in Gandhinagar yesterday remanded Asaram in four-day police custody.
