Cops injured in scuffle with picnic group

Four police officials, including a Station House Officer, sustained minor injuries when they got into a scuffle with a group that had come for a picnic near India Gate on Monday night, said police on Tuesday.

The incident was reported at around 11.30 pm when a police constable deployed near India Gate noticed a person urinating in the open. When he tried to stop him, he got into an argument with the constable and soon others, who later turned out to be in the same group, gathered at the spot. The picnic group comprised of around eight persons, including four women. All of them were married couples who had come from northwest Delhi localities that include Shalimar Bagh, Rohini and Pitampura.

Soon, other police officials of constable and head constable rank went to the concerned police constable’s rescue and the argument had by then turned into a heated one. It later ensued into a scuffle and the cops had to call the Station House Officer at Tilak Marg police station, said a police official.

However, the SHO was also not spared and became a victim in the ongoing scuffle, suffering minor injuries.

When things turned worse, the cops called up their seniors, and the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) rushed to the spot. The situation came under control only when he intervened.
“The whole group was taken to the police station. However, they were later let off with a warning and no FIR was registered against them,” said Vijay Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi).
