Cops find IM terrorist’s motivation

The suspected Indian Mujahideen (IM) terrorist Shakeel was apparently motivated by his brother-in-law Bashir, who was arrested in February for terrorism. Shakeel was arrested by Delhi police on 14 May.

Shakeel was employed in a Madarsa in Lucknow as Maulvi. Both the suspected terrorists were arrested by Delhi police's special cell within three months from UP.

According to Delhi police sources, Bashir alias Hamza, an IM motivator, had pretended to be a secular person and gained Shakeel's trust while studying in a college in Lucknow. Shakeel belongs to Sitapur while Bashir hails from Barabanki of UP.

With time, apparently, Bashir managed to convert Shakeel into a religious zealot and had also married his sister. It is reported that since the financial condition of Shakeel was not so good, and he had to support a big family, the lure of big money had also allegedly played a big role in Shakeel turning a terrorist.

Before Delhi's serial blasts in 2008 both of them were said to have visited Delhi. Bashir, it is alleged, was an associate of Riaz Bhatkal alias Shahrukh, the mastermind of several terrorist blasts across the country. He had also purportedly fixed a meeting of Shakeel with Bhatkal in Delhi before the serial blasts in October2008.

After returning to Lucknow, both of them started operating on the direction of Bhatkal, who was based in Pakistan. Between 2008 and 2009, Shakeel had manged to visit Pakistan to undergo terrorist training courses at Daura-e-Aam and Daura-e-Khas camps in Bahawalpur, Pakistan.

Shakeel is said to be the twelfth member of IM module to be apprehended by the Indian police. He is also the fourth IM terrorist to be arrested by the Delhi police. A team headed by DCP (special cell) Sanjeev Yadav arrested Shakeel in Lucknow.

It is alleged that he knows both Riyaz Bhatkal and Yasin Bhatkal, the two terrorist brothers and has been motivating youths for them. He had met Yasin several times before the Jama Masjid and German Bakery blasts and was in touch with him till November last year.

'Shakeel's arrest was crucial. He is in police custody and further interrogations are on,' said a highly placed Delhi police source. Delhi police had made a breakthrough with the IM terrorists in November-December 2011.
