Cops fail to arrest rape accused despite giving assurance

The Mumbai-based woman has alleged that she was gang-raped for several months by her husband and his friends.

The woman was so devastated by the Surajpur police’s laxity that she decided to go on a fast unto death from Monday in front of the SSP’s house in Noida. Singh had assured the 34-year-old woman that action will soon be initiated in the case. But so far no arrest has been made in the case.

The woman had met her husband Sanjeev Srivastava, a Noida-based software engineer, on 15 May through a social networking website. The man reportedly wooed the woman and asked her to come down to Greater Noida on the pretext of marriage. A week later, she landed here with jewellery and cash worth Rs 18 lakh and the two tied the knot at a local temple.

However, being a Christian, she asked Srivastava for a registered marriage which he refused. The woman alleged that three days later, he called four of his friends to their house and all five raped the woman together.

Since then the woman has been reportedly running from pillar to post to get her case registered. After two months, finally an FIR was lodged but the police are yet to make any arrest. All the men are at large.

On Monday, the woman was about to start her fast in front of the SSP’s house but she claimed that she was detained by the Noida police. She was only released after the intervention of media. She met Singh after that and was assured that within 24 hours her culprits would be arrested.

‘I was detained yesterday (Monday) and was only released when media persons intervened. I met the SSP and he assured me that I will justice. I want a speedy investigation into the matter and my culprits should be arrested and given the worst punishment,’ the victim said.  Singh did not respond to Millennium Post’s repeated calls.
