During the festive season, in the name of performing their duties, the constables reportedly misused their power.
The younger son of the 48-year-old man, who was reportedly set ablaze by two Delhi police constables, was on Wednesday, punched on the nose for failing to pay the extortion amount sought by a third constable.
Speaking to Millennium Post, few auto-rickshaw drivers in the Sainik Farm area said that there are some constables who used to harass them for money every day. On a monthly basis, the police officials used to charge between Rs 1,200 and Rs 4,000 depending on their ‘mood’. In the first week of November, owing to Diwali, these officials became more active.
Arun, an auto-rickshaw driver said, ‘I used to ferry passengers from Neb Sarai Extension, Neb Sarai Valley, Sainik Farm, Indira Gandhi National Open University and a lot more places. On 3 November at around 11 am, a police official near Sainik Farm stopped me. Seeing that I was not ferrying any passenger he openly asked me to pay Rs 2,000 as a Diwali bonanza. The moment I refused, he slapped me and then I negotiated the amount to Rs 700.'
There are around 70 auto-rickshaws running in Neb Sarai area and all drivers were forced to pay Rs 1,000-Rs 2,000 on Diwali.
Not only the auto-drivers but the general public in Delhi-NCR also faced the harassment. Last Thursday, Sajal Gupta (47), a property dealer in Faridabad was returning from Mayur Vihar in his Scorpio car after buying Diwali gifts for his loved ones. Mid way, near Mayawati flyover two police officials on a Bullet motorcycle stopped him and asked for a commercial licence to carry the 10 gift hampers. Gupta argued with the officials and tried to make them understand that to carry articles for household work, he didn’t need a commercial licence.
The officers, however, asked for Rs 1,500 to spare Gupta. ‘I took a few names of MLAs, who are my distant relatives after which they spared me,’ Gupta said.
