Cops arrest his brother in place of man who died decade ago

In a bizarre goof up, police arrested younger brother of a man who died a decade back after jumping bail. Though the police has admitted its mistake it is yet to release the innocent man who is being incarcerated for no fault of his. The incident is reported from Barabanki, a neighbouring district of Lucknow.

As per reports Vinod Singh, who was arrested under NDPS Act and released on bail had died almost a decade back when he was on bail. One fine morning a police officer of Jaitpur police station in Barabanki came to Vinod’s house in Lucknow and enquired about him. His younger brother Amitabh Singh told police that he had died a few years ago after he was released on bail.

The police officer listened to him and then asked Amitabh to accompany him to the police station to complete some formalities.

Once Amitabh reached Jaitpur police station he was identified as Vinod Singh and was arrested. He was charged with jumping a bail.

The Singh family protested saying the police has picked up a wrong man. The person who they were looking for had died. They even produced death certificate,  but in vain.

With no option left with them Singh family decided to move court. They approached Barabanki CJM, Shivani Jaiswal, on 19 October. The court asked barabanki police to file a report by 22 October. In his report, ASP Barabanki Anand Kulkarni said they had no evidence to establish that the individual in question was not Vinod.
