In a joint operation by West and North-West district police teams, three men including an ex-employee of a businessman were arrested on Thursday for making extortion calls to a 51-year-old businessman who escaped unhurt in a firing incident in Netaji Subash Place area. The accused used to make threat calls to the businessman under the name of Neeraj Bawana gang. The three accused are Icharam, Deepak and Vikas.
According to the police, the complainant, Ajit Gupta, was receiving threat calls from an unknown number several times in a day but never took any action. However, when the accused told him that they are members of Neeraj Bawana gang, Gupta got scared and approached the local police.
“When the gang called Gupta to come near Shalimar Bagh Ring Road flyover and give a cash amount of Rs 15 lakh, a team of police laid a trap and apprehended the accused. Police seized a country-made pistol and also impounded the motorcycle on which they were trying to flee,” said a senior police official.
During sustained interrogation, Icharam revealed that he was working as Gupta’s driver till he left this job three years ago.
