Cop shot by 2 bike-borne men, hunt on for criminals

Police suspect this to be a case of personal enmity, but other probabilities haven’t been ruled out yet, said a police official.

About 12.45 pm on Saturday on-duty constable Dharampal (26) had gone to the Maujpur Chowk to verify the arms license of a trader in the area. When he was about to start his motorcycle and head towards the Jafrabad police station, two bike-borne men rushed from behind and stabbed him near the waist and his revolver fell down, said a police official.

He further said, by the time Dharampal could pick up his gun, the two unidentified men opened fired at him and Dharampal received bullet injuries in his head and abdomen. Both accused were wearing
helmets and they fled from the scene immediately after the incident.

Soon after hearing gun shots, locals rushed to the spot and found Dharampal’s body lying in a pool of blood. There was a PCR van parked not very far away from Maujpur Chowk. It reached the spot immediately and Dharampal was soon rushed to the GTB Hospital, where he was declared brought dead, said a police official.

Police also said that Dharampal’s service revolver was missing from the spot. They suspect it to be a case of personal enmity. ‘However, we haven’t ruled out other angles yet and the case is now being
investigated both by the crime branch and special cell of Delhi police,’ said an official.

A case of murder has been registered and police is trying hard to identify the assailants as soon as possible, the official added.

According to a source, constable Dharampal had joined Delhi police in 2010 and it was earlier this month he was posted at Jafrabad. He had served at Okhla in south-east Delhi before being posted to the north-east district.

This is the second incident in north-east Delhi in 2014 in which a police constable was shot dead.

Earlier this year, a constable named Shivraj Tomar was shot dead by an alleged criminal, who was later killed in a police encounter.
