Cop injured after law student’s car hits him in Geeta Colony

A head constable of the Delhi Traffic Police in his mid forties was severely injured near Rani Garden in Geeta Colony in East Delhi when a 19-year-old law student driving his Honda City bumped into him. Alert traffic cops present at the spot somehow managed to chase the driver, Nikhil Tuteja, who was later arrested. Meanwhile, the head constable, Yogender is stated to be in a critical condition, said a senior Delhi Police officer.
According to the police, the accident took place at around 1.15 pm at the Pushta Road near Geeta Colony when H C Yogender posted at the traffic signal was standing when an over-speeding Honda City car instead of stopping, rammed into him. However, after alert traffic cops chased the car, the driver was apprehended.
Police further said that after hitting H C Yogender, the car dragged him a few metres after which the traffic cops gave a chase and detained the driver.
A student of a private management college in Ghaziabad, Nikhil is a first year law student, said an investigating officer. On the other hand, Head Constable Yogender recruited in 1989 has been in the police service for the past 27 years, said a senior traffic department official.
Eyewitnesses told police that the driver was driving rashly. “Whether he was under the influence of alcohol or not can’t be said with certainty. “We have arrested him and probe is on,” said a senior police official of the East district.
According to the police, passers-by made a PCR call after which Yogender was rushed to LNJP hospital for treatment. Later, he was transferred to Max Hospital in Patparganj. Doctors told police that Yogender is in a critical condition.
Meanwhile, police have registered a case against the accused under relevant sections of the IPC at the Geeta Colony police station and have impounded the vehicle. Further investigation is underway.
