A 40-year-old married NRI woman who lives in Australia was raped several times by a Delhi government’s transport department constable. He has been arrested by Delhi police and has been sent to judicial custody.
The victim is separated from her husband, a New Zealand citizen, whom she married 16 years ago and has had two children with. The three of them shifted to Australia after separation.
Ram Narendra Sharma, the accused and a friend of her ex-husband, used to visit them often in New Zealand.
But when the relationship soured between the husband and wife, he saw the victim through the separation. Later, he established physical relationship with her. But when the woman asked Sharma to marry her, he refused her proposal.
‘According to the victim, Sharma took her to New Zealand, Singapore, Australia and Jaipur where he allegedly had sex with her several times promising marriage. When she was in Jaipur, the duo had a heated argument that turned violent when he refused to marry her,’ a police official said.
On 6 March, the victim landed in Delhi and stayed in a hotel in south-west’s Dwarka. On the same day, she called Sharma to talk to him about their future. The moment he visited the hotel he allegedly attempted to have sex with her. When she denied, he used force on her. The victim went to Dwarka south police station and lodged a complaint against him. On the basis of her statement, the case has been registered. A medical examination was conducted, which confirmed rape.
‘After the medical reports, a case under the Section-376 (rape) has been registered against him. Sharma was arrested on Monday from his residence,’ the official added.
